Brightness without glare
Lisbon light is generous and sometimes unforgiving. Soft Hearted Calm Rooms plans three layers: daylight control at the shutter, a mid-level ambient wash, and a task point for reading or stretching. Matte finishes and mist blue-gray textiles cut bounce from pale plaster.
Shutters as the first instrument
We respect existing wooden shutters in Chiado and Alfama stock. Rather than replacing them wholesale, we add inner sheers or lined panels that slide clear when you want the full stripe of sun. Evening blackout is optional โ specified only when the room faces a bright courtyard or street lamp.
Softening hard rooms
Tiled floors and bare walls amplify footsteps and street noise climbing the hill. Rugs with dense pile, upholstered seats, and a single fabric wall hanging absorb enough echo to make a compact apartment feel calmer. This is acoustic styling, not studio isolation or soundproof construction.
Lamp placement rules we use
No overhead glare in the primary sit zone. Switches within reach of the chair. Cables routed along skirtings rather than across walk paths. Warm-white bulbs in the clay-toned palette rooms; cooler accents only where mist blue-gray already leads the scheme.
What we do not claim
We do not sell audio devices marketed for sleep routines, guided listening programmes, or clinical noise assessments. Light-and-sound work at Soft Hearted Calm Rooms means fixtures, textiles, and layout for everyday restful rooms.
